Q
* What’s the best way to
•create volume?
If only that were a simple question to
answer. When it comes to volume, there
are many variables. Is your hair heavy?
Fine? Curly?
► CONSIDER LAYERS
Ask your
Stylist
for
minimal layering. Too short and they’ll
spike out. Too long and they’ll appear
heavy and fiat. You just need enough to
create movement.
► USE THE RIGHT PRODUCTS
Skip the
moisturizing shampoos in favor of
volumizing formulas like Aveeno Nourish
& Volumize ($7) or Herbal Essences
Hydralicious Featherweight Shampoo
($4). Up the lift factor with a hair mousse:
Redken Body Full Carbo Bodifier ($16) for
straight styles, Suave Professional
Volumizing Foam ($3) for curlier hair.

Flip your
head
over and
blow-dry your hair
upside down, then add
a cool shot of air at the end to lock in the
shape. Rollers? Yes, they’re back. Use giant
ones placed haphazardly through the
hair,
advises Josh. They
create
movement at the
ends, which gives the illusion of volume.
Q
* My hair has been
• looking blah. Any good
pick-me-ups?
There are lots of low-impact ways to add
life to lackluster locks—with many solutions
as close as the nearest drugstore shelf.
► DRY AND DAMAGED?
Saturate hair in a
deeply hydrating treatment such as
Pantene Pro V Beautifill Lengths
5-Minute Strengthening Mask ($4) or
Ojon Restorative Treatment Oil ($21).

Clarifying shampoo
removes buildup from styling products.
Try Frederic Fekkai Apple Cider Rinse
($18), used every other week. Be aware
that clarifying formulas can be too strong
for colored hair.
GOLD METTLE
L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin, the European hair spray
beloved by hairstylists for its gravity-defying hold—
without stiffness—is finally available in the U.S. in an
updated mist version that complies with this country’s
environmental standards; $14, at Target stores
► BOOST SHINE?
Look for a gloss or
glaze. Both coat the hair shaft to give it
shine. We like clear versions, such as
Clairol Natural Instincts Shine Happy
($9). It’s virtually goof-proof and lasts
for up to six weeks.
► REJUVENATE?
“To improve hair’s
look and feel, I love a simple vitamin E
treatment,” says renowned colorist
Sharon Dorram (who uses Jason
Naturals’ Vitamin E Pure Beauty Oil,
$11). “I put it on dry hair at night, work
it through, twist my hair into a bun,
then shampoo it out in the morning.”
► TAKE A COLD SHOWER
Many
professionals swear that rinsing hair
with cold water after shampooing
amplifies color and shine, because it
smooths the hair cuticle.
Q
*
What is dry
shampoo?
“Simply put, it’s baby powder in
hair spray form,” explains Josh.
“It’s great for women who don’t
wash their hair every day, as it
absorbs the oil. It also adds texture
and builds lift at hair’s roots.” Try
Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo, $18,
or Batiste Dry Shampoo, $8.
